Abstract
This paper reflects the meaning of and some consequences on the problems of privatization of knowledge. The author draws his reflections from the observations and experiences in the fields of scientific education, general education (liberaleducation) and adult education, fields the author has been deeply involved. The paper starts with some examination of the status of the commoditization and privatization of knowledge in Asia, which expands rapidly in the age of globalization. What the commoditization and privatization of knowledge means is examined both from the development of human civilization and local folk culture. Examples are drawn from scientific development, the ideas of universities, and life-long learning. The examinations show that the commoditization and privatization are detrimental to scientific progress and human emancipation, only profitable to the giant corporations. Finally, some suggestions are proposed to counter the trend and preserve the folk cultures.
